AMD now says 2027 revenue will grow over 80%, but the cash it keeps after spending fell to $554M last quarter as inventory hit a record $11.5B.

Summary

AMD designs PC and server processors, plus AI chips that compete with NVIDIA's. Sales rose 45% last quarter, and Yahoo Finance reports management now expects 2027 revenue to grow more than 80%. The stock had fallen about 24% in the month before the report and was flat after it. The large AI chip deals with OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic turn into revenue only as AMD delivers Helios, its first complete AI server rack, in volume.

What AMD does

AMD designs chips and pays TSMC to build them. It is the main alternative to Intel in PC and server processors and is now trying to become the main alternative to NVIDIA in AI chips.12,22,23

What it sells

  • Data center chips58% of revenue, Q2 2026

EPYC server processors and Instinct AI chips that compete with NVIDIA's. They earned more than two-thirds of segment operating profit in Q2 2026.

  • PC processors27% of revenue, Q2 2026

Ryzen chips for laptops and desktops, sold through PC makers and retailers. AMD has been winning share from Intel here.

  • Embedded chips8% of revenue, Q2 2026

Programmable chips and processors built into factory equipment, cars, aircraft, medical devices and network gear.

  • Console and gaming chips7% of revenue, Q2 2026

The custom chips inside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, plus Radeon graphics cards. Sales follow the console cycle.

Who buys it

Mostly PC makers, cloud companies and distributors. No customer reached 10% of 2025 revenue. OpenAI and Meta have signed large AI chip deals that give them rights to nearly free AMD shares as their purchases grow, so AMD's AI growth leans on a few buyers.

Where you've seen it

The processors inside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S are custom AMD chips.

The backstory

AI labs spend most of their chip budgets with NVIDIA, whose data center sales were $89.0B in its latest reported quarter. The biggest buyers want a second supplier so they don't depend on one company for prices and deliveries. AMD's answer is Helios, a complete AI server rack, sold under multi-gigawatt deals that pay off only if the racks ship on time.

How the business makes money

Why AMD's AI deals only pay once its racks ship1,2,9,10,11,12,13,20,24,25,27

  1. Step 1

Big AI buyers like OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic want a second chip supplier besides NVIDIA, so they signed deals measured in gigawatts of computing.

  2. Step 2

AMD designs the chips and pays TSMC to build them. It now sells whole Helios server racks, bringing double-digit billions per gigawatt delivered.

  3. Step 3

AMD keeps about 56¢ of each $1 after the cost of making chips, less than NVIDIA's 75¢. Running costs grow slower than sales, so profit grows faster.

  4. Step 4

Part of the price is paid in AMD stock: OpenAI and Meta can buy up to 320 million new shares, about 20% more, for a penny each.

  5. What shareholders get

Shareholders are betting on profit growth, about 100% in 2027 by analysts' estimates, if Helios ships in volume and on time.

Advantages

Buyers want a second supplier besides NVIDIA

Major advantage

AMD's biggest advantage. OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic want a second source of chips besides NVIDIA, and penny-priced share rights give two of them a stake in AMD's success.9,10,5

Taking server share from Intel

Strong advantage

Proven over years. AMD now has 34.5% of server processor shipments, per Mercury Research, and an even larger share of high-end data center chips.12

It sells both processors and AI chips

Strong advantage

Rare and well timed. AMD is the only company selling leading x86 server processors and AI chips at scale, just as AI agents push more work onto processors.6,12

What's changing

Guidance rose, but the stock had already reset

The stock fell about 24% from its Oct 2 close to $483.90 before the report, a month in which rival Intel also guided well below expectations. The report raised the fourth-quarter forecast to about $17B, and the stock was flat. Helios volume gets its first full test in the fourth-quarter report.26,24,25,30
