Lucid burned $2.9B in the first half, has about $400M left on its Saudi-backed loan, and its cheaper car isn't due until the second half of 2027.

Summary

Lucid makes luxury electric cars, the Air sedan and Gravity SUV, and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund is its largest backer. It is still far from making money. A new chief executive has cut production and costs and pushed back the cheaper midsize car meant to fix that. The stock depends on whether Lucid's cash lasts until that car arrives.

What Lucid Group does

Lucid is a small maker of luxury electric cars, built in Arizona and backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. It sells too few cars to cover its factory costs, so each one loses money.24

What it sells

  • Air and Gravity cars87% of revenue, Q2 2026

The Air sedan and the larger Gravity SUV. Last quarter Lucid's cost of sales, including write-downs, was about twice its revenue.

  • Services and other13% of revenue, Q2 2026

Repairs and parts, cars placed with rental companies, battery and drive systems sold to other carmakers, and regulatory credits.

Who buys it

Mostly individual buyers, who buy directly from Lucid rather than through dealers. The Saudi government is the largest single buyer, at $96M or about a quarter of Q2 2026 revenue. The U.S. was 70%. Uber has agreed to buy Lucid cars for robotaxis.

Where you've seen it

Lucid sells cars to rental companies, so some renters have driven an Air or Gravity on a trip.

The backstory

Lucid builds too few cars to cover the fixed cost of its Arizona factory and engineering. In the first half of 2026 it also built about 3,200 more cars than it delivered, mostly before Silvio Napoli became CEO in June. He plans to save cash this year by selling down that inventory and spending less, then grow with a cheaper midsize car and robotaxi fleets.

How the business makes money

Why Lucid loses money on every car it builds1,2,7,9,25,26

  1. Step 1

Lucid sells luxury electric cars, the Air sedan and Gravity SUV, but only about 3,100 to 4,000 a quarter.

  2. Step 2

Its Arizona factory and engineering cost the same however few cars it builds. Last quarter the cost of the cars sold was about double their sales.

  3. Step 3

Investors cover the losses. The Saudi fund, Uber and share sales pay the bills, and Uber has invested $500M.

  4. Step 4

The fix is volume: a cheaper midsize car due in the second half of 2027, plus robotaxi fleets for Uber.

  5. What shareholders get

Nothing reaches shareholders. The share count rose about 70% since late 2023, and the Saudi fund holds about $3.1B of claims ahead of them.

Advantages

A patient Saudi backer

Major advantage

Lucid's lifeline. The Saudi fund has bought $2.3B of Lucid preferred stock since 2024. It also offers a credit line of up to $2.48B.1,17,24

Robotaxi partners

Strong advantage

Promising, but not yet earning. Uber plans at least 35,000 Lucid vehicles, and Gravity robotaxis with Nuro software are testing in the Bay Area before a planned launch late this year.9,18,29

A second factory in Saudi Arabia

Supporting

Useful later, not yet. Napoli says the Saudi plant, AMP-2, will be ready by the end of 2026, but midsize production there waits on suppliers.1,25

What's changing

Lucid has switched from growth plans to saving cash

Lucid has stopped chasing growth and started saving cash. In May, under an interim CEO, it withdrew its 2026 forecast so the incoming CEO could review the business. Napoli took over in June, cut about 1,500 jobs and a factory shift, and in August set the cash plan and delayed the midsize car. Third-quarter deliveries beat production, so inventory is coming down.1,2,5,12,25,26,27,28
