Investors are paying for Tesla's robotaxi business, and Tesla doesn't yet report how many robotaxis it runs or what they earn.
Tesla still earns about three-quarters of its revenue from cars, but sales are flat and profits have thinned. Investors value the stock on robotaxis, Optimus robots and AI chips instead, and Tesla is spending over $20B this year to build them. Last quarter's cash flow looked healthy only because Tesla delayed paying bills and took in customer deposits. The stock works only if self-driving becomes a real business before that spending outruns what cars can pay for.
Tesla is the largest U.S. electric carmaker and second worldwide to BYD, which sold 1.6 times as many battery cars last quarter. Cars bring in three-quarters of revenue and pay for robotaxis and robots.26,36,39,48,49
What it sells
- Cars73% of revenue, Q3 2026
Model 3 and Model Y are 98% of deliveries. Tesla says Model Y likely led Europe's battery-car sales, but BYD outsells it worldwide.
- Services and charging16% of revenue, Q3 2026
Used cars, repairs, insurance and paid Supercharging. It earned a record $734M of gross profit and grows with 10 million Teslas sold.
- Energy storage10% of revenue, Q3 2026
Megapack grid batteries and Powerwall. A 30% gross margin this year beats cars, and one quarter's sales top rival Fluence's full-year forecast.
- Self-driving softwareAbout 1% of revenue, Q3 2026 (estimate)
Full Self-Driving (Supervised), counted inside car revenue: about $1B a year from 1.74M customers. Its driverless version trails Waymo's.
Who buys it
Mostly individual drivers, buying online or in Tesla's own stores. Utilities, power producers and data centers buy Megapacks; SpaceX, Musk's rocket and AI company, bought $626M this year. The U.S. was 45% of Q3 revenue, China 19%.
Where you've seen it
Tesla Superchargers along highways, which drivers of many other brands' electric cars can now use too.
How it got this way
Tesla was incorporated in 2003, and Musk has run it since 2008. It chose to sell cars directly instead of through dealers and to build its own fast-charging network, whose plug all major carmakers have since adopted in North America. In 2016 it bought SolarCity, the solar installer Musk chaired. Every car carries cameras and a data link, so 10 million cars sold feed its self-driving software.35,37,26
Each car earns about $7,300 over its build cost, less than the $9,800 per car Tesla spends running the company
A buyer pays Tesla about $41,900 per car on average, by our calculation from Q3 car sales revenue and non-leased deliveries. That includes FSD and other add-ons. Building the car cost about $34,500, Tesla's own cost-per-vehicle measure, so Tesla keeps roughly $7,300, or about 18%, before research, sales and administration.
Running costs now outrun that. Operating expenses were $4.78B in Q3, about $9,800 per car delivered, and research alone was about $5,700 per car, mostly for AI. Services and grid batteries close the gap: together they made $1.69B of gross profit, which is why Tesla still showed an operating profit of $718M.
Two items flattered the quarter. Refunds of tariffs struck down by the Supreme Court cut car costs by $260M, about $540 per car, and energy costs by $526M. Regulatory credits, which other carmakers buy from Tesla to meet emissions rules, fell to $113M from $417M a year earlier as new U.S. laws restricted those programs, and that is after Tesla reversed $475M for credits buyers returned.26,36,35

Where we landThe car business isn't broken: per-car margin held near 18%. The problem is that AI spending now costs more per car than each car earns, so profit depends on energy and services until software revenue arrives.
Grid batteries earn Tesla's best margins, but they draw on the same scarce battery cells as its cars
Megapack is a shipping-container-sized battery that utilities, power producers and now data centers use to store power and smooth demand. Through nine months Tesla deployed 36.0 GWh and booked $8.43B of energy revenue, about $234 per kWh by our calculation, at a 30% gross margin. Cars earned about 18%.
Demand is ahead of supply. Tesla holds $10.73B of contracted energy revenue on longer contracts, $4.80B of it due within a year, plus $3.30B of customer prepayments. Musk said Megapacks are almost sold out for 2027. SpaceX, which now owns xAI, is a customer, with $626M of purchases this year.
Cells are the catch. Tesla relies on suppliers such as Panasonic and China's CATL for battery cells, says U.S. tariffs hit energy harder than cars, and says battery supply limits car output. Its answer is making its own: a 7 GWh LFP cell line in Nevada shipped the first all-Tesla-cell Megapacks, and Megafactory Texas started with 50 GWh of planned capacity.
Rivals are smaller. Fluence, which sells grid batteries built from other companies' cells, now expects about $2.4B of revenue for its whole fiscal year, less than Tesla's energy revenue in Q3 alone. Fluence blamed delays at its U.S. contract factory.26,36,35,39,40,49

Where we landEnergy is Tesla's best business and the most overlooked, at about a sixth of gross profit. It cushions the downside but can't carry the stock. The test is whether Tesla-made cells lift deployments well past 2025's 46.7 GWh.
Tesla's car business no longer pays for its ambitions. BYD now sells more battery-electric cars, and Tesla's operating expenses rose 39% last quarter on AI research. So Musk is betting the company on self-driving, spending heavily on robotaxis, Optimus robots and AI chips. The goal is software and ride revenue with far higher margins than cars.
How the business makes money
Why Tesla's car profits are paying for robotaxis1,4,26,27
- Step 1
Model 3 and Model Y make up 98% of Tesla's deliveries, sold directly without dealers.
- Step 2
Car profits have thinned. Tesla kept only about 2.6¢ of each $1 of sales as profit after running costs in Q3.
- Step 3
Every Tesla sends back driving data that improves Full Self-Driving, software about 1.74M customers pay for at almost no extra cost.
- Step 4
Those profits and Tesla's cash fund robotaxis, Optimus robots and AI chips, over $20B of spending this year.
- What shareholders get
The stock is betting self-driving becomes a real business before that spending outruns what cars can pay for.
Advantages
A self-driving business its customers paid to build
Major advantageTesla's biggest advantage. It puts cameras and its own driving computer in every car it sells, so buyers fund the hardware and the data. About 1.74M customers now pay for Full Self-Driving. The catch: that lead is in supervised driving, and Waymo is ahead where nobody is behind the wheel.
- 1.What it does differently. Cameras only, on cars customers already bought. Waymo runs its own fleet of over 3,000 cars fitted with costlier lidar sensors.
- 2.How it got there. Tesla built the camera and data link into its cars years before selling driverless rides, and 10.2 million cars delivered now feed its training.
- 3.Evidence it's working. Over 75% of North American buyers signed up for FSD at delivery in Q3, and paying customers rose to 1.74M from 1.04M a year earlier.
- 4.Our position. Durable in driver assistance. Unproven in robotaxis: Tesla's roughly 560,000 unsupervised miles a week compare with Waymo's 500,000-plus paid rides.26,39,40,43,46,47
A large grid battery business
Strong advantageTesla's most profitable business per dollar. Grid batteries earned a 30% gross margin over nine months, against about 18% on cars, and Q3 energy revenue of $2.88B alone topped the $2.4B Fluence now expects for its whole fiscal year.36,49,26
Its own chips and factories
SupportingHelpful but costly. Tesla designs its own AI5 and AI6 driving chips, is building a chip plant in Austin, and started Optimus robot production in Fremont, with outside deliveries expected around late 2027. It makes some battery cells but still relies on Panasonic and CATL.17,26,35,39,40
What's changing
Merger talk joins the robotaxi debate
On October 20 Musk said Tesla and SpaceX had formed board committees to study a merger. The next day Tesla beat profit forecasts on flat sales, and its filing cut 2026 spending to over $20B. On October 26 the stock rose about 6% after Barclays upgraded it, betting SpaceX pays a premium.26,27,36,42,43

Bull vs. bear: two bets on the same stock
- 1
A share is a small slice of the company. Its value comes from the profits the company will make in the future.
- 2
Nobody knows those profits yet. Buyers (bulls) pay today's price betting they'll beat what most people expect. Sellers (bears) bet they'll fall short.
- 3
When results come in, the price moves toward whichever side was right, and that side makes money.
Will spending on robotaxis, Optimus robots and chips, forecast above $20B in 2026 and rising after, bring in enough revenue to turn free cash flow positive in 2027, when analysts expect a burn of about $9B to $10B?26,27,28,29
If robotaxis and self-driving software scale quickly, Tesla earns high-margin revenue that pays back the spending while cars and grid batteries hold steady.
- The robotaxi fleet is scaling fast. Driverless miles grew eightfold in a single quarter.
- More owners are paying for self-driving software. Paying customers keep rising, and Tesla reports its largest car backlog in four years.
- Services and future battery sales are growing. Services gross profit hit a record, and cash received for grid batteries not yet delivered rose to $3.30B.
- Tesla has plenty of cash for the build. It holds $45.4B in cash and investments and has signed new credit lines it hasn't drawn.
If robotaxi revenue stays small, Tesla keeps spending on a build-out that its thin car profits cannot pay for, and cash flow depends on timing gains.
- Car profits are thinning. Operating margin was less than half the 5.8% of a year earlier, and operating profit fell below stock-based pay.
- Cash flow was flattered by timing. Without delayed bills and customer deposits, Tesla burned about $1.06B last quarter, by Electrek's calculation.
- Spending will keep climbing. Tesla's finance chief says capital spending will keep expanding for the next few years.
- The core businesses are shrinking. Car revenue fell 3% from a year earlier, and grid battery revenue fell even more.
Where Delphi landssellWe think the bear case is more likely than today's price assumes.See why
Tesla reports robotaxi miles, not cars, rides or revenue, and outside counts put the driverless fleet in the hundreds
Tesla discloses very little. Its Q3 report gives one robotaxi number: nearly 2 million cumulative unsupervised miles, up eightfold in a quarter. On the call, managers said the service runs in six U.S. metros and that the Austin Cybercab fleet grew about tenfold in its first month. They gave no fleet size, ride count, fare or revenue.
Outside counts fill the gap. A crowdsourced tracker cited by Electrek counts 397 driverless Teslas in Austin, more than half of them Cybercabs, and 34 in Houston. In the Bay Area, California still requires a safety driver in every car. Barclays estimates the fleet was driving about 560,000 unsupervised miles a week by mid-October.
Waymo is the yardstick. Alphabet reported more than 500,000 paid Waymo rides a week in April, from a fleet of over 3,000 cars, and Waymo raised money in February at a $126B valuation. Tesla's weekly miles are about the same number as Waymo's weekly rides, so Waymo still carries far more passengers.
The money is further out. The finance chief said cost per paid mile is still above Tesla's 30-cent target, and Musk said robotaxi revenue should become noticeable around the second quarter of 2027. Unsupervised driving in customers' own cars has slipped to the same quarter, and only inside robotaxi zones.26,39,40,44,45,43,46,47

Musk's timing on the Q3 call. Tesla gave no revenue figure.
Where we landThis is the risk that matters. The price includes a robotaxi business Tesla doesn't measure in dollars. We'd change our view once Tesla reports fleet size and ride revenue and that revenue grows each quarter; until then we count it as near zero.
In a sale of Tesla, Musk's pay award vests on market value alone, without the robotaxi and robot targets
Musk's 2025 award covers about 423.7M shares in 12 tranches. Each needs a market value milestone, from $2T up to $8.5T, plus one operational goal, such as 1 million robotaxis in service, 1 million robots delivered, 10 million FSD subscriptions or $50B of adjusted EBITDA (profit before interest, tax, depreciation and stock pay). None has been earned yet.
The proxy contains a clause that matters now. In a change in control of Tesla, the award vests based solely on market value milestones measured at that time. On October 20 Musk said Tesla and SpaceX had formed board committees of independent directors to study a merger. SpaceX was worth about $2.1T and Tesla about $1.5T.
The two are already tied. Tesla invested $2B in SpaceX stock in March, under 1% of the company, after SpaceX absorbed xAI. SpaceX bought $626M of Megapacks this year, and Musk owns 19.8% of Tesla. A merger would need more than half of all Tesla shares outstanding to vote yes.
Barclays upgraded the stock on deal hopes, seeing $450 a share at a 20% premium. By our math, on 3.95B shares that values Tesla near $1.8T, below the first $2T tranche. A bigger premium would start paying Musk without any robotaxi or robot target being met.37,36,41,42,43

Where we landA deal is the main way our Sell call goes wrong, because a premium lifts the price whatever robotaxis earn. It would also end the test this stock rests on. We'd judge any terms by whether Tesla holders keep the robotaxi upside.

- Expected revenue
- $28.62B
What to listen for: Fourth-quarter capital spending (the new forecast implies about $7B), the first 2027 spending plan, and whether Tesla discloses robotaxi fleet size or ride revenue.27,28
What would prove this wrong
- ✕A serious robotaxi crash or federal safety regulator action halts driverless expansion.
- ✕Capital spending rises again in 2027 while robotaxi revenue stays too small to matter.
- ✕Car gross margin, excluding regulatory credit sales, falls below 15% because of price cuts.
- ✕BYD and cheaper Chinese electric cars take more share in Europe and Asia.
- ✕Optimus deliveries to outside customers slip past late 2027, Musk's current target.
- ✕SpaceX agrees to buy Tesla at a premium, lifting the stock regardless of robotaxis.
Operating profit is only 2.6% of sales and spending keeps rising, yet the stock trades at about 13 times next year's expected sales, above the five-year median of 8.6.

The math behind the recommendation
Three 12-month price scenarios, weighted by probability, compared with the S&P 500 under the same method.
Robotaxis and self-driving software sales grow fast enough that AI revenue arrives before spending peaks, and free cash flow turns positive in 2027.
$39.52 sales per share × 15.3 = $604.31
Car sales grow modestly, robotaxi revenue stays small but rising, and spending keeps climbing, so free cash flow stays near zero.
$35.46 sales per share × 12.1 = $429.77
Robotaxi revenue stays small, spending in 2027 and 2028 climbs faster than sales, and investors stop paying for future AI revenue.
$32.23 sales per share × 10.2 = $327.84
Why these odds: Q3 beat profit forecasts, but 2027 profit forecasts fell from $2.24 to $2.15 a share in 90 days, with 10 cuts to 1 increase last month, sales only matched forecasts and $2.6B of cash flow was timing.
How the prices are built: Wall Street expects sales per share of $35.46 for the year starting a year from now (analysts range from $29.00 to $43.58). Today the stock trades at 13.3 times next year's sales per share; its five-year middle is 8.59.26,28,31,32,33,34
What tests the call: Q4 2026 earnings, with the 2027 spending plan and robotaxi fleet size (Jan 27)

At $398.50, Tesla costs more than usual against its own sales
Tesla trades at 13 times the sales analysts expect over the next 12 months. That ratio is the multiple: what investors pay today for each dollar of a year's sales. That is pricier than it has been 80% of the time over the past five years, when the middle was 8.6.
Analysts expect sales to grow about 18% the year after.

Full Self-Driving brings in about $1B a year, roughly 1% of Tesla's revenue
FSD (Supervised) steers, brakes and changes lanes, but a driver must watch the road. About 1.74M customers pay for it, and half are now on monthly subscriptions. On the Q3 call the finance chief agreed with an analyst's estimate of about $1B in annual recurring revenue.
Sign-ups are rising fast. Over 75% of North American buyers signed up at delivery in Q3, about 20 points more than in Q2. Each delivery includes a free first month, so the number that matters is how many keep paying after it, and Tesla doesn't disclose that.
Set against the business, $1B a year is about 1% of the last four quarters' $103.6B of revenue, and about a third of one quarter's $2.76B research budget. Musk's pay award needs 10 million active subscriptions, nearly six times today's count.26,39,40,37

Limits of this analysis
Claims that rest on thin or conflicting sources, estimates that had to be extended, and judgment calls.
- ?Q3 free cash flow of $1.53B includes a $2.59B working-capital boost; without it Tesla burned about $1.06B (Electrek's calculation). Whether those payables and deposits unwind in Q4 is unknown.
- ?The cut to over $20B of 2026 capital spending appeared in the quarterly filing, not the shareholder letter, and management has not said how much shifts into 2027.
- ?The rating sits near the Sell/Hold line: lowering bear odds from 35% to 30% would flip it to Hold. No low or high exists for 2028 sales, so the range extends 2027's spread.
- ?Robotaxi scale is hard to verify: Tesla reports unsupervised miles, not fleet size or ride revenue. Fleet counts here come from a crowdsourced tracker, and weekly miles from a Barclays estimate.
- ?The five-year median of 8.6 times sales uses later actual sales in place of forecasts investors had then, so the 'expensive versus history' comparison is approximate. Next earnings date comes from a data feed.
