Costco's boost from its last fee increase is fading, so store sales now have to carry the growth.

Summary

Costco runs membership warehouses that sell goods at a small markup and earn their steadiest profit from yearly fees. Fiscal 2026 was strong, with earnings per share up 14%, helped by the 2024 fee increase. That boost has now run its course, so growth has to come from selling more in each warehouse and opening new ones. The stock depends on that, because investors still pay a high price for Costco's earnings.

What Costco does

Costco runs membership warehouses that sell goods at a small markup. Membership fees are only 2% of revenue but about half of operating profit, so the business is built around keeping members renewing.25

What it sells

  • Food and sundries39% of revenue, FY2026

Dry groceries, snacks, drinks, cleaning supplies, liquor and tobacco. These everyday purchases keep members coming back.

  • Non-food goods26% of revenue, FY2026

Electronics, appliances, clothing, furniture, tires, toys and jewelry. Bigger, less frequent purchases than groceries.

  • Gas, pharmacy, services20% of revenue, FY2026

Gas stations, pharmacies, food courts, optical and travel. Gas is 11% of sales and carries thin margins, but it brings members in.

  • Fresh food14% of revenue, FY2026

Meat, produce, deli and bakery, which give members a reason to visit often.

  • Membership fees2% of revenue, FY2026

$65 a year in the U.S., or more for an Executive membership that pays 2% back. It is about half of operating profit.

Who buys it

84 million paid members, households and small businesses, plus 66 million extra household cards. Executive members make about 75% of purchases, and 92% of U.S. and Canadian members renew. The U.S. and Canada are 86% of sales.

Where you've seen it

The Kirkland Signature label, Costco's own brand, which it sells for less than national brands but at higher margins.

The backstory

Membership fees are Costco's steadiest profit, so renewals matter. More members now join online, many from a December 2023 campaign that ran weeks before Ron Vachris, president since 2022, became CEO, and management says online members renew less often. The U.S. and Canada renewal rate fell to 92.1% in early 2026. Management says targeted digital reminders have since started lifting it.

How the business makes money

Why Costco's profit comes from fees, not groceries1,2,3,6,7,8,9,21,22

  1. Step 1

Costco prices goods close to cost, keeping only about 11¢ of each $1 of sales after paying for the goods.

  2. Step 2

Low prices draw members, who pay a yearly fee, $65 in the U.S., and keep renewing. 42.3 million pay extra for the Executive tier.

  3. Step 3

Fees are only 2% of revenue but about half of the profit left after running the warehouses, because they cost little to collect.

  4. Step 4

New and busier warehouses spread fixed costs over more sales. Costco plans about 30 net new warehouses a year.

  5. What shareholders get

Shareholders get a dividend, but mainly a bet on steady growth. Earnings should rise about 10%, and investors pay about $40 for each $1 of expected yearly earnings.

Advantages

Membership fees pay for low prices

Major advantage

Costco's biggest advantage. Fees brought in $5.9B in fiscal 2026, about two-thirds of net income. That lets Costco price goods close to cost and still earn a steady profit.1

Members keep renewing

Strong advantage

A strong advantage. Members kept renewing after the 2024 fee increase, the first in seven years, and Executive members are now a record share.2,9

Far bigger than other clubs

Strong advantage

Hard to match. Sales reached $297B across 939 warehouses in fiscal 2026. Costco has about ten times as many paid members as BJ's, the next listed club.1,2,14

What's changing

The fee boost has faded; now growth must come from sales

With the 2024 fee increase fully absorbed, growth now has to come from selling more and opening more warehouses. Costco plans 33 openings in fiscal 2027, five of them relocations. Meanwhile cash has piled up, reaching $20.2B in August. Its last special dividend, $15 a share, was paid in January 2024.1,2,3,12,23
