The AI spending bet
Big tech is spending hundreds of billions on AI data centers, and stocks swing on whether it pays off.
Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet and Meta each plan to spend well over $100 billion this year on AI data centers. That money becomes sales for chipmakers like Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom and TSMC, so their stocks rise together when spending plans grow. The spenders' own stocks rise only when cloud sales show the money is earning a return, as at Microsoft and Amazon in July. When spending grows faster than sales, investors sell. Companies betting their own products on AI, like Tesla, face the same test: spending now, payoff later.
Where it stands Alphabet had its worst day ever Oct. 29 after its cash flow turned negative. The Nasdaq fell 2.9% Oct. 30, its worst month since March 2025.
