China's cheap AI models
When a Chinese lab releases a top AI model built for far less, investors question U.S. chip spending.
U.S. chip stocks are priced for years of heavy spending on AI data centers. When a Chinese lab shows it can build a model close to the best U.S. systems for far less, investors ask whether all that spending is needed, and chip stocks fall together. DeepSeek did this first. In July 2026 Moonshot's Kimi K3 did it again, in a week when TSMC also said its costs were rising, and the Philadelphia chip index entered a bear market.
Where it stands No Chinese model has moved chip stocks since July; Nvidia and the Nasdaq closed at records on Oct. 5.
