The memory chip shortage
AI data centers are bidding up memory chip prices: record profits for memory makers, higher costs for device makers.
Combined change in market value of the companies the theme hits directly. Ripple effects aren't counted, and not every dollar of each move is down to this theme.
What's happening
AI chips sit next to stacks of high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, which feeds them data fast enough to run large models. HBM is cut from the same silicon wafers as ordinary DRAM, the working memory in phones and PCs, but Micron says it takes about three times the wafer space per bit. About 20% of the industry's DRAM wafers now go to HBM, and Samsung expects nearly 30% next year. Only Samsung, SK hynix and Micron make DRAM at scale, and new factories take years: SK hynix's next big plant opens its first cleanroom in early 2027, and Micron's new Idaho plant was not expected to start before 2027. So ordinary memory ran short. TrendForce estimated contract prices for conventional DRAM rose 90% to 95% in the first quarter of 2026 alone. Flash, the chips that store files and keep them when the power is off, followed: Kioxia's selling prices rose about 70% in a single quarter.
Who wins, who pays, and why
Memory makers sell into a market with more buyers than chips, so most of each price increase becomes profit. Micron's revenue rose to $54.2 billion last quarter from $11.3 billion a year earlier, with a gross margin of 86.8%. SK hynix earned a 76% operating margin in the June quarter, and Samsung expects a record operating profit of 107.4 trillion won ($80 billion) for the September quarter, almost nine times a year earlier. Flash makers Sandisk and Kioxia gained the same way. Device makers pay those prices and can pass on only part of them. Apple raised Mac and iPad prices by at least $100 in June. Nintendo raised the Switch 2's price. Xiaomi's adjusted profit fell 43% in the June quarter.
Where it stands On Sept. 30 Micron forecast another record quarter and said it will spend more on factories, citing customer demand visible through the end of the decade.

Mostly DRAM, and the largest maker of HBM for AI chips. June-quarter operating profit rose 557% to 60.5 trillion won, a 76% margin.
- Samsung Electronics005930.KSnot in the 100+$930B market value since Sep 2025
The biggest memory maker overall, but memory is one division beside phones and TVs. Expects record quarterly operating profit of 107.4 trillion won.
- +$152B market value since Sep 2025
Flash only, spun off from Western Digital in 2025, so it gains from storage prices, not HBM. Revenue rose 372% to $8.97 billion last quarter.

Flash only, formerly Toshiba's memory business; makes the same chips as Sandisk in factories they run jointly. Selling prices rose about 70% in one quarter.
Sells hard drives to the same AI data centers; revenue rose 55% to $4.38 billion last quarter as storage demand climbed.

Raised the Switch 2's U.S. price to $499.99 and expects about 100 billion yen of higher costs, mostly memory, plus tariffs.
Less-watched ways to play it
Companies with real exposure to this theme that haven't moved like the leaders. Each one is paper-traded with $10,000 from the first close after we publish it and tracked against the leaders and the S&P 500, here and on the track record. Picks are never edited or removed from the log. This is research, not a recommendation to buy.
- Exposure
- Memory interface chips, sold mainly to Micron, Samsung and SK hynix for server and PC memory modules, made 48% of revenue in the June 2026 quarter.
- Why it's less watched
- $11.7 billion market value, about 1% of Micron's; eight analysts cover it, against 49 for Micron.
- Not yet priced in
- Up 46% since Sept. 2, 2025, against 284% to 2,997% for the leaders. It fell 23% in April when tight DRAM supply capped module sales. Forward P/E 32, versus 5.8 for Micron.
- The catch
- It is paid per memory module, not per price increase, so a shortage can cut its volumes. It is also answering a Justice Department antitrust grand jury subpoena.
- Exposure
- Two HBM makers gave Camtek orders and forecasts worth over $260 million for 2026 and 2027, close to its $255 million first-half 2026 revenue. About half of revenue is AI-related.
- Why it's less watched
- $7.1 billion market value, under 1% of Micron's; 12 analysts cover it, against 49 for Micron.
- Not yet priced in
- Up 95% since Sept. 2, 2025, against 284% to 2,997% for the leaders. June-quarter sales grew only 8% because new orders ship late 2026 and 2027. Forward P/E 34, versus 5.8 for Micron.
- The catch
- Its price already assumes a big second-half jump in sales. A few HBM and packaging customers drive the orders, and the company is based in Israel.
- Exposure
- Ion implant tools for DRAM makers were 22% of Axcelis's systems revenue in the first half of 2026; power and other mature chips took 77%.
- Why it's less watched
- $4.2 billion market value; five analysts cover it, against 49 for Micron.
- Not yet priced in
- Up 69% since Sept. 2, 2025, against 284% to 2,997% for the leaders, because most sales go to slower power chips; first-half revenue grew 7%. Forward P/E 28, versus 5.8 for Micron.
- The catch
- Memory is the smaller part of its business, and its all-stock merger with Veeco, agreed in September 2025, still awaits Chinese antitrust approval.
- Exposure
- Memory modules made 60% of sales in the quarter ended Aug. 28, 2026: $341 million, up 158% from a year earlier on higher volumes and prices.
- Why it's less watched
- $3.9 billion market value, the smallest of these picks; eight analysts cover it.
- Not yet priced in
- Up 220% since Sept. 2, 2025, the most of these picks but below every leader (Samsung 284%, Micron 770%). Forward P/E 17, versus 5.8 for Micron and 7.4 for Sandisk.
- The catch
- It buys memory chips and builds them into modules, so it earns a markup, not the shortage windfall. Gross margin was 27.5% last quarter, against Micron's 86.8%.
When it moved markets
- Week of Sep 28Micron reported record results Sept. 30 and forecast more, but slipped 0.7% for the week as it raised factory spending plans.
- Week of Aug 10Micron rose 10.7% as AI results reassured investors and NewStreet Research upgraded the stock to buy.
- Week of Jul 27Apple fell 7.2% and Qualcomm 11.6% after both blamed the memory shortage for weak forecasts.
- Week of Jun 29Micron fell 13.8% as investors took profits, though it remained up more than 260% for the year.
