AI eats software

Fear that AI agents will do the work companies now pay software subscriptions for, shrinking software makers' sales.

Companies like ServiceNow and Salesforce charge a fee per user for business software. If AI agents can do the same tasks for less, customers need fewer subscriptions. That fear set off a software sell-off in early 2026 that traders called the SaaSpocalypse. The flip side is security: AI that finds software flaws faster pushes companies to buy more protection, so CrowdStrike tends to rise on AI news that worries investors in other software makers.

Where it stands Salesforce's strong August results and expanded Anthropic partnership eased fears that AI will replace business software; ServiceNow rose 12.6% that week.
